The volunteer certificate: what it is and how it helps

Good to know · Updated:

Volunteering is unpaid – but not invisible. With the volunteer certificate (Freiwilligen-Nachweis) you can show what you did and what you learned.

What it says

The certificate describes how long and what you did, and which skills you gained. You write it together with someone from the organisation; both of you sign it.

How to get it

Just ask your organisation. Organisations funded under the Austrian Volunteering Act must issue it on request. It exists on paper and digitally.

How it helps

  • as an addition to your CV in job applications
  • to see for yourself what you can do
  • as proof of experience you did not gain at school

Good to know

If your organisation needs a criminal record certificate, for example for work with children, volunteers in volunteer organisations do not pay the application fee.
